The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has raised the alarm that the North-West zone of the country is gradually becoming terrorists’ haven.

He explained further that securing the zone is very strategic and a mission that must be accomplished for peace to be attained.

Speaking at the interactive session with retired senior military officers from the North West in Kaduna, on Monday, General Irabor remarked that the armed forces have invested heavily in the zone with strategic instalments and manpower.

“We have to guard it against any internal and external threats beyond the conventional military techniques and tactics we know.

“Thankfully, we were able to review these techniques and tactics to match with the present reality. But there are other issues and I feel we must engage you(retired officers) having been part of us and still we see you as a critical stakeholder to collectively tackle the security challenges in our midst.”

He posited that as retired military officers, the Armed forces still believe that with their experience, having served as senior military officers and now staying with the people in their respective localities they have a lot to offer.

General Irabor maintained that there would be no excuse from any quarters “in this mission of securing the country.”

Earlier, the General Officer Commanding, I Division, Major General Ali Keffi said the one division is the traditional home of the Army, saying, “this division gave birth to other GOCs in the country. So the interactive session in the division was not out of place.”

Represented by Brigadier General, Adeleke Ayennuga, the GOC remarked that as an institution, the army has always feel good to evaluate itself from time to time.

According to him, this evaluation affords the army the opportunity to understand where it has done well and where it has to improve.

However, he lamented that in spite of the successes attained in the division, the zone is not only hit by the scourge of banditry, and other criminalities but the high profile security challenges in Kaduna and Niger States is disturbing in spite of the efforts to curtail the menace.

He said the recent onslaught against the bandits in the zone had been successful as many bandits were degraded.
