The Right Reverend Olubunmi Akinlade, Bishop of the Diocese of Ife in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), asserts that Nigeria’s abundant resources should prevent the country from facing socio-economic challenges.
He made this statement during his presidential address at the third session of the twelfth synod of the Diocese of Ife, which took place at the Cathedral Church of St. Philip, Ayetoro, Ile-Ife, Osun State. The theme of the synod was: “Jesus Said Follow Me: Who is the 21st Century Church Following?”
According to Akinlade, Nigeria’s ethnic diversity and rich human and natural resources are significant assets. “Nigeria is a great and blessed nation. We are fortunate to have diversity, with over 400 ethnic groups, each contributing unique strengths. Moreover, the nation is abundantly endowed with both natural and human resources, including expertise in various fields, both locally and in the diaspora,” he stated.
“Despite these blessings, we continue to face economic, social, health, and security challenges. This should not be the case. The recurring question among many thoughtful Nigerians is: When will we get it right as a nation and reach our promised land?”

In reference to the state of insecurity, Akinlade called for increased efforts to address the situation. “The actions of the current administration and our armed forces in combating insecurity have been remarkable and encouraging. Despite the loss of personnel and even senior officers in recent times, our security agencies continue to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect our nation. They truly need our prayers and support,” he remarked.
“The recent technical and intelligence assistance from the USA is also welcome. This momentum should be maintained, utilising both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies, alongside improved and efficient funding for our armed forces. Security agencies should share and deploy intelligence using the best standards attainable. No meaningful progress can be made without adequately securing lives and property.”
He also expressed optimism about the country’s potential for progress, stressing the need for deliberate efforts to “enforce strict fiscal discipline”, particularly in curbing expenses, preventing waste, and enhancing local production.
“The average Nigerian should not be overwhelmed by harsh economic circumstances. Additionally, the ongoing challenge of terrorism has gained global attention. Nigeria must persist in confronting this threat for our collective survival and prosperity,” he added.
