Recent news reports indicate that the cumulative power supply of eight hours per day that Nigerians currently enjoy is a far cry from the standard, 24-hour supply that they ought to be enjoying.
This fact should cause the government to pause and ponder over the problems in the power sector. The Federal Government has, over the years, embarked on several power sector interventions, with disastrous results. Billions of naira were expended on the projects.
In collaboration with the World Bank, the government recently set out guidelines for the sector. It stated that its intention was to create a viable, privately-run industry. But that remains to be seen.
Nigeria currently generates between 3,000 and 5,000 megawatts, but how can this take care of an estimated 170 million people? The World Bank report presented statistics that portray Nigeria as a poor country, indicating that about 75 million Nigerians lack access to adequate electricity. This is a sad situation that needs to be addressed.
