THE Chinese Government on Tuesday doled out scholarship awards to 49 students of University of Abuja as a mark of a unique bond between Nigeria and China as both countries celebrate independence anniversaries on October 1.
Charge D’ Affairs of the Embassy of China in Nigeria, Mr Zhao Yong, presented the certificate of awards to the beneficiary students at the Main Campus of the University, Gwagwalada Airport road.
He reiterated the commitment of the Chinese Government towards supporting Nigeria in her effort to build the capacity of the youth and delivery of quality education to the citizenry.
Yong said: “Celebrating October 1st together constitutes a unique bond between China and Nigeria.
“I wish to express my warmest congratulations to the 49 winners who will be rewarded with the October 1st Awards, and I hope you together with your peers carry on China-Nigeria friendship and become goodwill Ambassadors of our two peoples,” he said.

While next February would mark the 50th anniversary of China-Nigeria diplomatic relations, October 1st is a joint holiday with Nigeria marking 60th anniversary of independence, as well as the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
He described as exemplary the Nigerian response to COVID-19 pandemic, noting that the outbreak of the pandemic at the beginning of the year, has become the most serious public health crisis since World War II.
“After the outbreak, the Chinese government attaches great importance to safety and well-being of foreign nationals, including foreign students,” he said adding that 79 Nigerian nationals including 50 students were in Wuhan and no one got infected.
Vice-Chancellor of University of Abuja, Professor Abdulrasheed Na’ Allah, in his remark, commended the1 Chinese government for the gesture and charged the beneficiary students to be more determined to succeed in their academics so as not disappoint the University and the parents.
