NGOs canvass for media support in the coverage of activities

Non-governmental Organisations at the forefront of the campaign on mental well-being for victims of violence across the country have raised alarm on the dangers of the misrepresentation of activities of the groups in the Nigerian media.

The spokesperson of the groups, Friday Ochili  in a statement made available to our reporter on Saturday in Osogbo after the laughing of the maiden edition of its “Cauz Magazine” in Abuja last Thursday, however, charged the media to work with them as partners to make their objectives achievable.

According to him, it is the role of NGOs to provide support for the vulnerable, dependent people and communities in Nigeria, affirming that, it was the showcasing of their achievements that led to the birth of CAUZ Magazine.

The group, however, Insisted that, there is an urgent need for critical action from Media practitioners to change the ugly trend of misrepresentation of the group activities.

He posited that over a thousand of these organizations are providing critical humanitarian interventions in different communities to those affected by insurgents and sought for accurate reportage that could enhance their efforts.

Friday further advocated for Media practitioners and writers to invest more in bridging the information gap between nongovernmental organizations, victims, and the host communities.

‘While pointing out that, the organisation is also to educate Humanitarian aid workers on the safe practices on their mental health and their operation, particularly in crisis-prone areas, he stressed that,the newly unveiled magazine is produced to help the vulnerable about the mental health and ways to impact their lives positively.

In his own submission, Mr Kunle  Afolabi like many other humanitarian journalists called for the review of the existing policy on humanitarian activities to reflect the true nature of the nation.

He also spoke on plans to introduce local dialects in their subsequent publication to enhance efficient communication among the victims of the crisis.
