NGO advocates for passage of VAPP bill by Kogi assembly

A non-governmental organisation has advocated for the passage of Violence Person Prohibition (VAPP) bill by Kogi State House of Assembly as a legal tool for the protection of Kogites from all forms of violence and offences.

The Executive Director, Challenge Parenthood Initiative (CPI), Eunice Agbogun disclosed this on Friday on the occasion of a Media Roundtable on Kogi State Violence against person Prohibition bill held in Lokoja, Kogi State.

According to her, CPI observed that during the 2019 Kogi Governorship election voters represent 85.7 per cent of the victims of Violence in Kogi State.

“Our findings further reveal that though there are legal frameworks in the state and that is why perpetrators of violence were not prosecuted and many individuals could not access Justice.

“Deeply concerned about the prevalence of violence in Kogi State, CPI with support from National Democratic Institute (NDI) saw the need from the forgoing to advocate for the passage of the VAPP bill by Kogi State House of Assembly as a legal tool for the protection of Kogites from all forms of violence and offences,” she stressed.

She further mentioned that other states of the federation such as FCT, Kaduna, Rivers and others have since signed into law the VAPP act and are currently implementing it.

She said the purpose of the VAPP bill is to eliminate violence in our private and public lives, to prohibit all forms of violence against persons and to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for the victims and punishment to the offenders.

“The bill had already scaled through First Reading and just last week the bill scaled through second reading,” she said.
