The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in partnership with Nigerian tertiary institutions has announced the 27th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES) essay competition with the theme “Securing Our Future: The Fierce Urgency of Now.”
NESG said with a market of over 200 million, coastal access to facilitate trade, and abundant human and natural resources, Nigeria has the potential to become a continental and global force that influences economics and policies.
A statement by the Head, Corporate Communications, NESG, Yinka Iyinolakan, said that there is immense promise in Nigeria’s socio-economic potential.
“However, today the headlines about Nigeria do not reflect her economic promise. Instead, they dwell on insecurity, unemployment, poverty, insurgency, inflation, and overall uncertainty,” the statement said.
“Widening economic inequality, rising poverty and unemployment levels are arguably the most potent catalyst for insecurity in Nigeria.
“With 40.1 per cent of the population living below the poverty line as of 2019, a relatively high inflation rate that has sustainably risen well above 11per cent since November 2019, coupled with a high unemployment rate of 33.3per cent, more Nigerians have fallen below the poverty line since the NBS’s last poverty calculations.

“Within this context and to adequately articulate Nigeria’s priorities for laying a foundation to securing our future, the NESG calls for entries to the 27th Nigerian Economic Summit Essay competition,” the statement added.
NESG said the essay’s proposed idea or policy should be clearly articulated, politically feasible, and compatible with its guiding principles, which include: dedication to socio-economic inclusion and shared prosperity, commitment to a free-market economy, encouragement of private sector investment, creation of an enabling environment, governance in the national interest, commitment to the rule of law, and establishment of an economic foundation for democracy.
The statement said entrants must be young Nigerians between the ages of 16 to 25 years and should be undergraduates of a tertiary education institution in Nigeria or any part of the world.
“Entries must be written in English Language and be the original work of the writer and only one entry per participant is allowed.
“Entries are expected to be insightful, coherent and focused on the theme. The maximum word count for entries is 1,500 words and the essay should be written using the APA style of referencing.
“Plagiarism is not accepted in the competition and entrants must carefully review their essays before submission.
“The closing date of submission is before midnight (GMT) on October 3 2021 and all entrants should note that while they retain the copyrights that they have for the pieces they submit, by entering the NES Anniversary Competition, each contestant consents to the use of his/her name, and/or pieces or part thereof in any educational material, research or media and publicity done by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group without further notice or compensation,” the statement added.
NESG said it can publish or decline to publish, use or decline to use any submitted pieces at the NESG’s sole discretion.
It noted that prizes would be awarded to the first three (3) winners, with a certificate of performance, an internship at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group and an essay summary presentation to an audience of top public and private sector officials at #NES27.
“The top 50 entrants would also be given virtual access to participate at the summit,” NESG asserted.
