A total number of 240 people benefitted from the sum of N34 million disbursed last Sunday in Lagos by the NASFAT Agency for Zakat and Sadaqat (NAZAS), a humanitarian arm of the Nasrul-lahi-l-Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT).
The chairman of NAZAS Board of Directors, Hafiz Bakare, at the Annual General Meeting (AGM)/Muharram zakat disbursement, disclosed that NAZAS had assisted 40,000 indigents with N350 million.
Bakare said the N350 million represented the total disbursement that had been made by ZAZAS since 2014 when the agency was established.
NAZAS, according to him, has also lifted Internally Displaced Persons (IDP).
He said: “The agency has continuously attended to the needs of people with urgent health requests as well as provided scholarship grants to over 120 students annually while not relenting in organising health missions in communities which have benefitted over 2,000 indigents.
“The monthly stipends for the aged are growing on a yearly basis with good testimonies. Partnerships with like-minded individuals and organisations have brought relief to the poor and needy through our food distribution initiatives with over 1,000 beneficiaries.”
The chief missioner of NASFAT, Imam Abdul Azeez Onike, called for increased sensitisation of Muslims to the institution and administration of zakat for reduction of poverty in the society.
Imam Onike said Allah blessed some people with wealth in order to cater for the poor.
“Not all of us will be billionaires, not all of us will be millionaires, but the basic necessities of life will be accessible to everybody because Allah did not send his creatures to come and suffer,” he said.
The General Manager of NAZAS, Mufutau Adelotan, urged the 240 beneficiaries from the sum of N34 million that was disbursed at the event to make judicious use of the items they received.
According to him, the government can partner with NAZAS by enlightening their Muslim workers to give back to the society through the payment of zakat and sadaqah.
He appealed to the government to provide amenities that would make people not to lack “so there won’t be the need for people to request for zakat as much as they do now.”
One of the beneficiaries, Halimat Ibrahim, a fashion designer, was presented with an electric sewing machine.
“I work at Dopemu, Agege. The sewing machine will serve a lot of purposes. It will enable me to make more money. It used to be very stressful without an electric sewing machine.
“Sometimes, there would be apprentices but there would not be sewing machines for them to use. But now, my work will be different. God bless NAZAS. God continue to be with them,” Ibrahim said.
