In an effort to create employment opportunities for youths, the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) is collaborating with Solomon and Carston Engineering Company Limited to conduct a five-day workshop on skill development in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Lagos State.

The workshop, which began on Monday in Badagry, Lagos West Senatorial District, will conclude tomorrow.

During the training workshop, participants are receiving guidance on various aspects of ICT, including information systems, software and data, the relevance of ICT in business and industry, home education and training, entertainment and the arts, science, engineering, and global positioning system.

They are also learning about types of computers, computer memory, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, presentation graphics software, communication software, computer networks, and the internet, among other topics.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Tokunbo Ayekoti, the Chairman of Solomon And Carston Engineering Company Ltd, expressed gratitude to Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, who represented Lagos West Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, and NAQS for their partnership over the years.

Ayekoti defined ICT as a broader term encompassing all communication technologies, including the internet, wireless networks, cell phones, computers, software, video-conferencing, social networking, and other media applications and services. He emphasized the importance of ICT in reducing unemployment, as it has significantly transformed communication, socialization, and relationship development.

Ayekoti further stated, “In today’s world, ICT is a potentially more powerful force of socialization than home or school. With the help of ICT, health systems seek to advance in preventive medicine and patient education, providing considerable economic savings and health benefits. ICT and intelligent living environments can also play an increasingly important role in caring for the elderly at home, helping older people cope with daily activities and increasing their independence.”

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), Dr Vincent Isegbe, expressed his gratitude to Senator Solomon Olamilekan and the training consultant for organizing the workshop.

He advised the participants to remain focused, listen attentively, actively contribute during the workshop, and ultimately utilize the knowledge acquired to create employment opportunities for themselves.

The workshop had a total of 60 participants, along with various stakeholders in youth and skills development.
