NAFDAC warns against use of formalin for preservations

Meat and fish sellers in Kebbi State have been warned against the use of formalin as a means of preservation of their products.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Agency ( NAFDAC), Director General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, handed out this warning in Birnin-Kebbi at a one-day sensitisation meeting organised by NAFDAC yesterday.

Represented by the Agency’s North West zone Director, Pharmacists Dauda Gimba, averred that the chemical called Formalin is used in hospitals to preserves dead bodies which is harmful for human consultation.

She admitted that the sensitisation campaign would contribute positively to the federal government concerted efforts to inform, educated and alert the public about the inherent danger of consumption and the use of those spurious regulated products.

The Director-General, therefore, hope that at the end of the campaigns, participants and the target audience would be dependable partners of the agency to be at the forefront of sustaining public awareness campaigns by disseminating the information and messages to the grassroots.

In his speech on the occasion, the Chairman, House Committee on Health, Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu, commended NAFDAC for the campaigns so that people would be aware of the danger of using falsified medical products and unwholesome foods.

The target audience according to the Director-General are, market women and men, road transport workers and employers, communities, youth organisations and students.
