I have abnormal discharge from my nipple about three months now and I read from a previous column of yours about the different colours of a discharge. The discharge I’m experiencing is a clear one. My question is that, what is the cause of this discharge? What harm can it cause to me? Which medicine can cure it?

A clear discharge from the nipples is usually associated with a cyst (collection of fluid). Although this cyst may be harmless, it is important that a thorough examination should be carried out to exclude a more serious breast abnormality. In view of this, I will advise that you see your doctor who will order for a cytological test of the discharge from your nipples in order to confirm the cause of your complaint. If your doctor confirms that you have a cyst or lump in your breast, then he would arrange to remove them and send them for a detailed histological examination.
