Ashaolu Idowu, popularly known as Young Ai is a new-breed Nigerian entertainer born in 1999 and bred in Lagos. The Nigerian singer and songwriter offers an Afrobeats experience influenced by reggae, trap and hip hop which he has honed to some perfection. In this interview with FRIDAY TREAT, he talks about his newly released song, music career, among other things.
What’s the inspiration behind your new single, ‘Ara’?
It was just the vibe I was on at that time, because at that time there’s that feeling I always have in me which is “these people no know say I bad when I start them go wonder o”. So, I was just inspired by how I was feeling at the time basically, which led to a banger.
While recording the song, how far did you think the song will go?
From the very first day, I knew this was a different song from what have been recording. But I never knew it would take me this far, I’m thankful to God because it’s still a very long ride.
Since its release, how has the acceptance been?
It has been amazing, great.
‘Ara’ seems to be your reintroduction onto the music scene. Could you explain why it seemed like you have been away?
Yeah, it’s not like I have been away, I have just been working on myself, making covers to songs to master my sound. Basically I have just been working and you know when it’s your time it is.
Your major music influence is Big Wiz, (formerly Wizkid). What about him actually inspires you?
Everything about him influences me. The way he makes sure he delivers back to back, his composure, the way he handles issues. That man is a great human.
Are you aiming to be the next Wizkid?
I’m aiming to be the next Drake. Yes, the aim is always to do better than who you looking up to, so, definitely I want to be the next Drake.
What are some of the challenges you have had to grapple with in your music career?
I would say the other parts of the music business which I really don’t know about and also finance.
You describe yourself as a new breed entertainer; can you shed more light on this?
Yes, I’m coming in differently and I’m making sure you won’t just enjoy my music alone, you would enjoy everything about Youngin. As that sounds “young and capable”, “young and always ready.
What’s that distinguishing factor about you that will give you an edge above your music counterparts?
My vibe, my style, with time you would get to know more.
Do you have any short or long term goals for your music career?
My goal is to leave a legacy, set a record worldwide as an African, a Nigerian to be precise. To make sure my music heals and keeps the soul alive.
