A 24-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Ayodele Ejiwole, is to spend the next six months in jail for stealing another two-wheeled vehicle valued at N160, 000, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court ruled on Tuesday.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Akokhia, who handed down the verdict, said the sentence should serve as a deterrent to others.
Akokhia, advised Ejiwole, who resides at No. 18, Odoeran St., Oworonshoki, Lagos, to desist from committing a crime.
The accused, charged with a two-count offence of conspiracy and theft, had pleaded guilty.
He, however, urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying he committed the crime due to ignorance and poverty.
The prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Aigbokhan had told the court that the complainant reported the case at Oworonshoki Police Station on Jan. 1.
Aigbokhan said the complainant parked his motorcycle with registration no. AKD 286 QF in front of his house only to wake up in the early hours of the day to discover that it had been stolen.
“On inquiry, it was discovered that the accused was seen rolling the motorcycle away.”
The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised). (NAN)
