Dorcas Adejayan is only 24 years old and already living out her dreams on the daily. Nicknaming herself “Kazzy”, this rising star hails from Ogori Magongo, Kogi Central, Nigeria and ready to be the next Nigeria’s Simi but with a better ginger.
In this interview, Kazzy shares her thoughts on music and more!
Who is Kazzy?
My name is Dorcas Adejayan, and I am the youngest child of my parents. I graduated from Kogi State University Anyigba, which is now known as PAAU, with a degree in Mass Communication. I am from Ogori Magongo LGA in Kogi.
What inspired you into music?
I can’t pick a particular reason but I’ll just say maybe because it makes me happy. It’s a channel through which I can air my thoughts and feelings without having to discuss with anybody. I wasn’t much of a talker growing up so I had a lot of pent-up emotions that I didn’t know I was keeping inside of me. I realised that whenever I write songs and try to create melodies with them, I always feel better. So, I like the whole idea of singing out my thoughts and emotions instead of just discussing them with someone.
What genre of music do you like?
I like every genre. I’m a huge consumer of music so I listen to every kind of music even the ones in languages I don’t understand. As long as I like how it sounds, I’ll connect to it in my own way.
Which Nigerian artiste inspired you while growing up?
Jesse Jagz, Asa, Tiwa Savage, and 2face’s music greatly inspired me. I always loved listening to them.
You sound a lot like Simi. Does she influence your music in any way?
(Smiles)… I hear that a lot but I don’t think it’s true. Simi is a very talented singer-songwriter and I hope I get to work with her someday.
What have been your most challenging moments?
Coming up with ways to put my sound out there. At the moment, I’m doing most of the creative work alone and it can be sometimes exhausting.
What are your projections for the next five years?
To be a well-established artiste at home and abroad. It is my dream to make music that can stand the test of time so in five years from now, I want to be known as that artist that makes music people can connect with.
