The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, says manufacturing fake and adulterated drugs constitutes a crime against humanity.
Adewole said this at the inauguration of the South-South Zonal office of the National Agency for Food and Drug administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Port Harcourt.
He commended NAFDAC for safeguarding the health of the nation while urging it to utilise the new office properly.
The minister noted that the major commitment of the Buhari administration was to complete all abandoned projects in the country.
Adewole commended NAFDAC for the successful completion and inauguration of the agency’s Zonal office, and called on other agencies to emulate it.
The minister, who urged the Rivers Government to continue to collaborate with NAFDAC, commended it for donating the land for the building of the office.
He also called on other agencies to give their support to NAFDAC to enable it achieve set objectives.
Adewole stated that the war against fake and adulterated drugs was a continuous one that must be fought and won.
He urged manufacturers to produce drugs that were of value to consumers, instead of releasing into the market poisonous and harmful products.
The Commissioner for Health in Rivers, Dr Theophilus Odagme, pledged the support of the state government to the agency.
Odagme said that the government would form a synergy with NAFDAC to achieve set goals.
The commissioner urged the agency to be on alert at all time in the task of eliminating fake and adulterated drugs entering the state.
Also speaking, the acting Director General of NAFDAC, Mrs Yetunde Oni, said that the new office would boost the working condition of the agency’s workforce in the region.
‘’We need a conducive working environment that can only be achieved through this kind of edifice, it is the first of its kind in the nation,‘’ Oni added.
