Chairman, Abeokuta North local government, Hon. Adebayo Ayorinde and the Society of Family Health (SFH) on Thursday flagged off the distribution of free House to house insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to contain the spread of malaria in the local government.
The flag-off ceremony was held at the Iberekodo Health Center, Abeokuta, which also had other partners in attendance, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), and Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
Speaking at the event, wife of the Chairman, Mrs. Bolatito Ayorinde observed that malaria had become a major public health concern, especially as it is one of the leading causes of maternal and child deaths in the country.
While noting that the disease is preventable and curable, she stated that the use of treated nets significantly reduces the risk of contracting the parasite.
“One of the sure ways of reducing the burden of malaria, for now, is using the insecticide-treated mosquito net. We therefore have to take advantage of this exercise in order to bring down the number of malaria cases.
“It is not enough for us to register and receive the nets, we should ensure we use them judiciously, by sleeping inside the nets, while the edges are appropriately tucked in.
“We are all protected from mosquitoes that spread malaria when we sleep in the nets. We would go from household to household to distribute the nets. I urge you to be available during the registration, as the distribution would commence from the 26th of August to the 6th of September,” she noted.
While appreciating the efforts of the wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, as well as the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Tomi Coker for their support in ensuring good and healthy living conditions for everyone in the state, Mrs. Ayorinde promised to also replicate the same passion in championing the war against malaria in the local government.
Over 200,000 residents of the KG are being targeted to receive insecticide-treated nets in this drive.
The Managing Director of Society for Family Health, Dr Omokhudu Idogbo commended the state government on her efforts in curtailing the percentage of malaria infection cases which has encouraged the initiative to replace the earlier distributed and used nets in the last three years.
He added that the 3-in-1 campaign will further sensitise people on Covid-19, the laid down precautionary measures and getting shots of vaccines when it is made available while the last stage is the planned efforts to completely eradicate cholera disease in the society.
Earlier, the Head of the Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Mr. Babatunde Owolabi while welcoming the dignitaries on behalf of the Chairman, Hon. Ayorinde expressed gratitude to the state government and the Roll Malaria Back Partners for making frantic efforts on improving the health status of the indigenes and residents of the Local Government Area.
Mrs Ayorinde was thereafter decorated as the Net Advocate of Abeokuta North LG by the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Atinuke Deze.
