Loan: Senate gives MDAs one week ultimatum or face sanctions

Lawan

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Wednesday, read the Riot Act to Ministries, Agencies and Departments (MDAs) of government that refused to appear before it to defend its input in the loan request of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lawan said that the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly would henceforth take appropriate and prompt action.

According to him, it would not condole any sabotage to the efforts of the Federal Government to secure the loans to fund infrastructure development that Nigerian desperately needs.

The Senate President, therefore, issued a one-week ultimatum to Heads of the affected agencies to appear before the committee on loan and foreign debt.

Lawan said though the National Assembly had approved the budget framework, which captured the loan request, there was the need for the ministries to make inputs.

He listed the invited ministries to include: Ministries of Power, Health, Environment, Women Affairs, Petroleum Resources, Water Resources and National Agency For Science And Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).

The Senate also adjourned the plenary to Nov 9, following the passing of the 2022 Appropriation Act for second reading.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, who announced the adjournment said it was designed to enable various committees to conduct budget defence for MDAs.

Lawan disclosed that budget defence by MDAs would begin on Monday, Nov 18, 2021.

He urged the committees to be detailed in the scrutiny of the budgets of MDAs.

Meanwhile, during the debate on the general principles of the appropriation bill on the second day allotted, Senators canvassed for the full implementation of the budget to address poor infrastructure, insecurity as well as equity in the distribution of projects across the country.
