Nigerian singer, Simi, has urged families to reconsider the weight of responsibility often placed on the shoulders of the first-born child.
In a statement she made on her Twitter page, she emphasised that being the eldest does not translate to an obligation to carry the entire family’s load.
Simi advocated a shift in mindset, encouraging families to let their first-borns breathe and embrace their individual journeys.
The singer pointed out that many eldest children, despite their familial responsibilities, might harbor feelings of resentment.
Simi shed light on the unspoken struggles faced by these individuals, suggesting that constant pressure can strain their relationships with family members.
In her appeal, she brought attention to the emotional toll, noting that “even simple interactions, such as text messages, can trigger panic attacks in first-borns who feel overwhelmed but are often hesitant to express their struggles openly.”
The mother of one emphasised the importance of allowing “first-borns the freedom to pursue their own paths and make choices without being encumbered by the undue pressure often associated with being the first-born.”
Acknowledging the potential strain on family dynamics, Simi disclosed that it is not uncommon for first-borns to develop strained relationships with their families due to the burden placed upon them.
“Despite their inner turmoil, many may feel obligated to suppress their true feelings, creating a facade of normalcy”, she added.
