S*xual activity is not just intercourse. It also include oral s*x, self-stimulation and s*xual touching or caressing. Certainly less s*xual activity for some women probably couldn’t hurt but less s*xual activity could mean earlier menopause.
Now, researchers are suggesting that for women looking to delay the onset of symptoms like hot flashes that can cause discomfort in the years around the menopause, more s*x probably couldn’t hurt.
The researchers in a study had found that women who engage in s*xual activity weekly or monthly have a lower risk of entering menopause early, relative to those who report having some form of s*x less than monthly.
They observed that women who reported having s*xual activity weekly were 28% less likely to have experienced menopause than those who had s*x less than once a month. Likewise, those who had s*x monthly were 19% less likely to have attained menopause — defined as 12 months without a period — than those who had s*x less than once a month.
Dr Adebukola Adesina, a consultant obstetrics and gynaecologist, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, however, stated that the assumption that less s*x could mean earlier menopause is not clear.
“If you don’t have s*x, it has nothing to do with menopause. From the age of about 40 even if they are having s*x it is not likely that they will get pregnant so, the relationship is not clear. The age of menopause all over the world is about 51 on average. But women who smoke attains menopause a little bit earlier by one year.”
Dr Adesina, however, stated that abstinence from s*x is not an established reason women attain menopause early. She added that early menopause runs in some families and women whose ovaries were removed or who had undergone radiotherapy may attain early menopause.
The Oyo State Team Leader of the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), Mrs Stella Akinso stated that the assumption that less s*x could mean earlier menopause is an assumption that is based on the general notion that an “organ that you don’t use, you lose.”
Mrs Akinso stated that s*x is medically and psychologically good for the body and menopause should not be a reason for a woman to stop irrespective of the many myths and misconceptions on s*x.
“s*x is a feeling. When you have s*x, there are some hormones that are released in your body. These are feel-good hormones. When you feel happier, you feel healthier. s*x itself is like medication and it is good for women, and it is good for men,” she added.
The research, published in Royal Society Open Science, is based on data collected from 2,936 women, recruited as the baseline cohort for the USA’s Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) study in 1996/1997. It’s the largest, most diverse and most representative longitudinal cohort immune system is impaired. If the pregnancy was unlikely due to a lack of s*xual activity, that means it wouldn’t be beneficial for the body to allocate energy to the ovulation process.
Instead, she said, the findings support the “Grandmother Hypothesis,” a theory that suggests the menopause originally evolved in humans to reduce “reproductive conflict” between different generations of women and to ensure their grandchildren survived and thrived.
