A Benin-based legal practitioner, Smart Agbonlahor aged 65 and another 55,-year old man, Uwangue Osaigbovo, were on Wednesday arraigned before Ogbeson Chief Magistrate Court in Benin City, Edo State capital, for allegedly forging the document of the Oba of Benin for land approval.

The duo were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and forgery.

The prosecutor, Kehinde Iyawe, a police Sergeant, said that the accused persons charged in case number MOGB/103c/2021 on July 19, 2021, along Benin/Auchi road, Aduwawa, within Oregbeni Magisterial District, purportedly forged an Oba of Benin approval by the then Oba of Benin, Oba Akenzua on April 15, 1966, for land measuring 100ft by 200ft with beacon No N35/B, 46/B, 54/B, 55/B respectively, “knowing same to be false with the intention to claim ownership of the same landed property belonging to Mr Henry Okhuarobo” who is the Majority leader of the Edo state House of Assembly.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 516, and 484 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the defunct Bendel State, 1976, which is now applicable in Edo.

When the charges were read to them, the accused pleaded not guilty, with their counsel appealing to the Chief Magistrate to grant them bail and assured him that they would not jump bail.

The prosecutor did not object to the bail application and the Chief Magistrate, Prince Mutairu Oare, admitted the accused persons to a bail of N200,000 each, with one surety in like sum.

Oare also directed that the surety must deposit two recent passport photographs of himself and that of the accused with the court and thereafter adjourned the case to August 23 for hearing.
