The Senate on Wednesday officially reacted to the leakages from the roof of the National Assembly complex as a result of heavy downpour which almost disrupted its sittings on Tuesday.
Cleaners were sighted scooping water from the floor of the lobby of the National Assembly.
The Senate at the commencement of plenary said there was no provision for N37 billion for renovation of National Assembly complex as widely reported by some section of the media.
The Senate clarification was sequel to the point of order raised by Senator Abdullahi Sabi who specifically expressed reservations about the reportage by a certain television station.
The Senate which clarified that only N9Billion was approved for the renovation further disclosed that no fund has been released.
It further clarified that the budget for the renovation was under the purview of Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), not in the National Assembly budget as reported in some section of the media.
Nigerian Tribune checks revealed that Director General of the Budget Office, Ben Akabueze had last year clarified that only N9.2bn was provided for renovation/retrofitting of the National Assembly (NASS) Complex in the revised budget as against N27bn.
He further disclosed that “the initial provision of N37bn in the 2020 Appropriation Act for this was cut by 75% due to the impact of Covid-19 on government revenues.”
