The Ekiti State government has called on Ikoro-Ekiti and Ipoti-Ekiti communities in Ijero local government areas of the state to eschew violence and embrace peace over the crisis on the designated headquarters of the newly created Irede local council development area.
The governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, had, on Friday, signed the bill into law for the creation of 19 LCDAs in addition to the existing 16 LGAs in the state.
But the people of Ipoti-Ekiti took to the streets, on Saturday, to protest against the alleged plan to move the headquarters of the new council area from the town.
In a peace meeting held at the governor’s office with the monarchs and chiefs from the affected communities in the Ijero council area, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Biodun Omoleye, who presided over the meeting assured the warring communities that the government would address the agitations “and thereafter make a just and fair decision on it.”
Omoleye who noted that resorting to violence would not bring the desired results, in the long run, said dialogue in a peaceful manner would go a long way to help in addressing the concerns of the communities.
He added that government would investigate all the issues raised by the communities, urging them to go back home and maintain law and order.
The communities, through their spokesmen, promised to abide by the decision of the government on the headquarters of the new council areas, which they said would help in bringing government closer to them at the grassroots.
