A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji has told Nigerians and the civil society organisation (CSO), with interest in the electoral bill, that the controversial section (50) circulating in the visual media was not a recommendation made by the joint technical committee to the national assembly.
Magaji represents Zagon Kataf/Jaba federal constituency in the House of Representatives also serves in the technical committee on the Electoral amendment bill of the national assembly.
In a television programme monitored by our correspondent, he said the controversial section (50)2 being circulated does not conform to the committee’s consideration of the bill on transfer of results.
He said: “I do not want to assume that it is true that it has been changed because even if it had to be changed, the whole technical committee would have to sit again and look at some of the changes said to have been smuggled into the electoral bill, which are strange.
“I have been receiving calls and have seen some documents on the social media that are completely different from what I believed were considered.
“So, let me assume that these are not true and then, I am waiting to see the Gazetted copy that was considered. I have my own copy in my office and I know what is there.”
On the cap fixed for presidential governorship and legislator election funding, he said it remained complex to ascertain at implementation because it hasn’t started monitoring a politician spending.
Magaji further stated that the provision of social amenities would eliminate huge spendings by politicians.
He explained thus: “I would prefer today that every Nigerian have free education; every Nigerian have free healthcare and then when you go to campaign let us see what you will tell people. Let us see your policies, that would reduce election expenses.
“I tell you this, I am a player in this, I know where many people spend money while running for an office, when we fix all those areas we will discover that election financing will immediately crash,” he said.
