In its bid to reduce the rate of fire incidents in the country, the Landlords Voice Association of Nigeria (LAVAN), the umbrella body of landlords in Nigeria, said it would soon commence a sensitisation programme for landlords across the country, regarding the Fire Service Act Cap F29 of 2004.
The Act, signed in 2004 by the Federal Government, is designed to ensure proper protection of lives and properties against fire incidents.
Disclosing this at a press briefing held recently in Lagos, president of the association, Vincent Falola stated that such sensitisation had become imperative; since the country had continued to witness countless number of fire incidents resulting in loss of lives and properties, despite the existence of the federal law.
He commended the Federal Government for signing the Fire Service Act in 2004, compelling all landlords and markets under the 774 local government areas to provide safety fire extinguishers in their premises, noting that if well implemented, the Act will go a long way in curbing the frequent fire incidents in Nigeria.
“Therefore this Fire Service Act is hereby being introduced to the public by LAVAN for all landlords, including state governments to comply with since we believe nobody is above the law. We are sure the relevant state government laws regarding this cannot contradict this federal law,” Falola said.
