As a promise fulfilled, the Lagos State government on Tuesday presented keys of a three-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments to two of its teachers, Mrs Agnes Elusakin and Mr Pius Ikuseidunmi (now late), who won the Best presidential teacher and the best school administrator of the year awards in Nigeria two years ago, respectively.
The former at the time of winning the award was a teacher at Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, and now a Principal of Community Junior Secondary School, Bayeiku, Ikorodu while the latter, who is now late was Principal of Government Junior College, Ketu-Epe.
Also, while Mrs Elusakin who had earlier been rewarded by the Federal Government during the award ceremony in Abuja with a brand new car and a certificate, collected the keys to her new house and the ownership letter at Tuesday’s event, while the widow of the late teacher, Mrs Risikat Ikuseidunmi received the key and the house document on behalf of her nuclear family.
The two keys and house ownership documents were handed over to each of them on behalf of the state government jointly by the state’s Commissioners for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo and her colleague in Housing, Mr Moruf Akinderu-Fatai at a brief presentation ceremony held at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Education at Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja.
Speaking separately, the two commissioners, Mrs Adefisayo and Mr Akinderu-Fatai said the gesture was a promise fulfilled by the state government to appreciate the two recipients for doing the state proud by winning the national honour in 2019.
They said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu specifically announced at the State Council’s meeting in 2019 when the awardees were officially presented to him and council members that the state government would give them a house each as a gift for their exemplary performance that won them the national recognitions and that he reaffirmed the promise at the inauguration ceremony of a new housing estate in Igbogbo, Ikorudu this year January.
“So, what we’re doing today is to fulfill the promise,” the commissioner for education added.
She said the honour is not only to reward hardwork and commitment of the recipients and make them to strive for improved performance at work and other legitimate activities but also to spur their colleagues particularly in the education sector to emulate the spirit of excellence, she said Lagos State is known for.
In another development, the two commissioners also received officially the Principal of Bolade Junior Grammar School, Osodi, Mrs Latifat Adenike Ojo, whose school is adjudged the best Secondary School in Nigeria at this year’s World Teachers’ Day in Abuja as well as Mrs Temitope Obiwumi and Mr Rasheed Odenike who at the same event came as the second runner-up and third runner-up Best Teacher in public junior and senior secondary schools categories in Nigeria, respectively.
While Bolade Junior Grammar School is rewarded by the Federal Government with a certificate and a new brand 18-seaterToyota Hiace Bus, which the two commissioners were also inaugurated for the school use yesterday, Mrs Obiwumi and Mr Odenike were presented by the federal government during the Abuja award ceremony with a certificate, a laptop, and fridge, as well as a certificate and fridge in that order.
Speaking on behalf of the house gift recipients, Mrs Elusakin thanked the state government and the governor in particular for fulfilling the promise made two years ago.
She said the gesture would be reciprocated through more commitment to duty so as to lift the state education sector to a greater height.
On her part, the widow to the second house recipient, Mrs Risikat said she received the gift with mixed feelings.
“I am happy that the state government eventually gave my late husband a two-bedroom apartment as an appreciation for his exemplary service to the state, but it would be a more joyful celebration and my children if their father were to be alive to receive the honour by himself,’ she said.
Mrs Ikuseidunmi, also a secondary school teacher in the state told Tribune Online at a sideline that even though they have a house of their own in Epe where the family live, they would also make use of the new house by themselves.

The Dangers In Mixing Toilet Cleaner With Bleach
Few weeks ago, Eniola Oyemolade, a journalist, decided to get creative while cleaning, by mixing a toilet cleaner and a bleach together. She did this with the thought that if one product works, mixing it with another would make it even better.
Unknowing to her, Mixing bleach with toilet cleaner creates a poisonous gas that can cause adverse health reactions, including death.
“After the mixture, I started feeling a burning sensation in my throat and I had to leave the room because the odour was really bad too,” she said.
