Lack of confidence in health sector, reason for medical tourism abroad ― Minister

THE Honourable Minister of Health for State, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has attributed frequent tourist medical trip of Nigerians to overseas to the lack of confidence in Nigeria health system.

The Minister made the statement at the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi on Tuesday, during the health week celebration of the centre, tagged “the electronic way, the excellent way.”

Dr Osagie explained that Nigeria hospitals are well equipped and have the personnel to man them, but they have not build the confidence in Nigerians that they are capable.

“Our health personnel should stop embarking on strike, there are other ways of resolving issues with the government and not strike actions. These strikes makes our patient lose confidence in us.

“For instance, if a patient carry out operation in our hospitals and within the next two days, the family are asked to move him out because health workers are on strike. This is highly unacceptable, it is not done in other parts of the world and it has to stop,” the minister said.

He also urged state governments to boost primary healthcare delivery in states to help reduce the influx of minor cases in the medical centres.

Earlier, the Medical Director of the Center, Dr Joshua Giyan, informed that, the centre has gone purely digital by storing all patients records in computers.

He thanked the Minister for the visit, and assured that the centre would continue to improve on its services in order to better the lives of Nigerians.
