Officers and men of the Kebbi State Area Command of Customs in collaboration with its Police unit had early in the week intercepted and detained a tanker-trailer loaded with 60,000 litre capacity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly called petrol along the busy Niger / Benin Republic road, in Baguio L.G.A.
The Area Controller of Customs Command in the State, Comptroller Hafiz Kalla, while briefing Journalists over the seizure of the vehicle said the driver could not produce relevant documents to convince his men of their destination, he was, therefore, arrested for further investigation.
“In the spirit of inter-Agency collaboration, the matter will now be handed over to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) led operation white created by the Presidency to curtail PMS diversion for them to conduct their own investigation about the point of loading and its destination,” He said.
He said further that “the Customs is guided by laws in the performance of our duties, therefore relevance provision of our laws will be strictly adhered to for guidance and compliance.”
“We shall be guided by sections 1and 2 of Customs and Excise (Special Penal and other Provision Act) which gives the Nigeria Customs the power to sell, destroyed and dispose of any perishable or inflammation items.” He concluded.
Mr Kalla also informed newsmen that between the month of January and June this year, his Command had made 124 seizures of assorted items which include, 2,279 bags of 50kg of foreign rice, 454 packages of Indian hemp, 1,008 bags of 50kg of foreign Fertilisers.
Others are, 157 bales of second-hand clothing and new textile materials, 12 units of used vehicles, known as Tokunbo cars among other items seized, the duty paid value of these items according to him, stands at N133,117,568.
On the revenue generation aspect, the Comptroller said, “As you may be aware, all borders under Kebbi Area Command are closed, however, the Command was able to generate over N5 million as fees from the auction sales of perishable and inflammable items.”
The Command according to him, shall by the grace of God continue to keep vigilance to ensure that Kebbi Customs suppresses the cancer of smuggling in Nigeria.
