Kano-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, in his effort to douse the ranging tension, has apologised and withdrew his remarks about Holy Prophet Mohammad.
It was gathered that the cleric apologised after some of his students asked him to do so.
It will be recalled that the following the dialogue committee between Kabara and the Coalition of Ulamas, the committee recommended to the Kano State government to take appropriate action against the cleric.
The chairman of the dialogue session, Professor Salisu Shehu, who is also the Director, Centre for Islamic Civilisation and Inter-faith Dialogue, Bayero University, Kano, stated this in a communique signed by him and two others issued after the debate on Saturday.
The communique stated that while giving a verdict on the debate, Shehu pointed out that Kabara failed to answer all the questions he was asked satisfactorily.
Prof. Sheu in the communique recommended that the state government should take a necessary line of action to ensure peace, law and order in the state.
However, in a voice message that went viral on Sunday, the cleric said he hoped “this will be a source of forgiveness, mercy, and compassion for me.”
According to him: “These statements that came out of my mouth caused a lot of controversy about Prophet Mohammad. I withdrew them and withdrew them.”
This audio came hours after the first on Sunday where he reportedly apologised to those who understood that he made insulting remarks against the Prophet.
It will also be recalled that in the first message, he said: “If these words are from me, I have fabricated them, they are not in the books, then it is enough of a great sin for me to hasten to repent.
“But if it is not from me, it is from those books, then this is something else. We should ask God to enlighten the nation to stand up and help our religion, to bring out false traditions from it because lest our religion be destroyed by them.”
