Kano State House of Assembly has assured to give priority to the Maternal and Child Healthcare Bill when transmitted to the House.
The passage of the bill, the house notes, will improve maternal healthcare delivery across the state as well as to address the issues of pre-natal and post-natal problems.
The Speaker, Ibrahim Chidari, made the assertion while declaring open a two-day retreat for principal officers organised by the Resource Center for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) with the support of Misereor Germany in Kaduna State recently.
According to him, the retreat has come at a better time and the House would support the speedy passage of the bill as soon as it is transmitted to the House.
Hon Chidari, however, assured the organisers that “I’m confident that at the end of the two-day retreat we will be able to come up with a final draft of the Kano State Maternal and Child Healthcare Bill that will be ready for onward transmission to Kano State House of Assembly.”
He disclosed that “the outcome of this retreat will not be swept under carpet. As soon as the draft bill is transmitted to the House we will give it all necessary considerations and speedy passage into law.”
Chidari then expressed appreciation to the CHRICED for their wise decision to hold the retreat at this time.
Speaking on the occasion, the Executive Director of the centre, Dr Ibrahim Zikirullah, said the centre is optimistic that the House will use its legislative powers to advance this cause and give hope to our citizens, stating that the CHRICED reworked and revised the previous draft the bill and now encompasses child care.
Speaking in the same vein, the Program Manager of Misereor Germany, Mr Cosmas Olaniyan, highlighted, that the policy being reviewed based on equity, natural justice and good conscience will save us tomorrow.
He commended the centre, for sustaining the cause since 2015 and hope that this legislative retreat will bring out applicable laws that will be beneficial to those who nurse our population to multiply for a sustainable society.
