With a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.93 on a scale of 5, Joshua Ayanlade emerged as the overall best-graduating student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) for the 2021/2022 academic session. The Mechanical Engineering graduate, in this interview by YUSUF ABDULKADIR, speaks about his academic journey and how he achieved this feat.
Why did you choose to study Mechanical Engineering?
I chose to study mechanical engineering despite its perception of being difficult because it is a versatile and dynamic discipline. In addition to acquiring knowledge about the field itself, mechanical engineering also provides insights into various other engineering disciplines. This versatility serves as a gateway to diverse career paths.
Did you think you were going to emerge as the best-graduating student?
While I envisioned the possibility of graduating as the best student in my department and faculty, I did not anticipate emerging as the overall best-graduating student, considering that I have not heard any engineering student previously achieve this, let alone a mechanical engineering student. I maintained a consistent commitment to giving my best effort to my academics, and God crowned my effort.
How easy was it to graduate with a 4.93 CGPA?
Graduating with a 4.93 CGPA was no easy feat. Mechanical engineering courses, particularly my thermofluid courses, were both broad and demanding. In these courses, the significance of theories is on par with calculations, and the importance of textbooks equals that of lecture guides and notes. The varied nature of courses, ranging from theory-based to calculation-based, and some a combination of both, presented different levels of difficulty, necessitating different reading approaches to do very well in them.
How did you feel when you realised there was the probability of you emerging as the best-graduating student and even when it was finally announced?
I felt very happy upon discovering that I emerged as the overall best-graduating student, and I am thankful to God for the strength He gave me throughout this journey.
In what ways did your background aid your sterling performance?
I have been an A student since my secondary school days. I believe that whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well, which serves as a motivation for me to give my best in everything I undertake. Also, my parents were supportive in various ways. Their unwavering support, encouragement, and prayers significantly contributed to my success.
On average, what was your study schedule like and what reading style worked for you?
I do not have a fixed study schedule. It varies based on the course workload and how much time I have to cover the topics yet to be touched. Typically, on weekdays, I used free periods to make my notes. On average, I dedicate around four hours per day to studying, but usually more during test and exam periods, depending on the remaining topics to cover.
Regarding my reading style, I take necessary notes during lectures. During my study session, I developed notes using the provided lecture guide, recommended textbooks, and additional online sources for more understanding. I spend ample time making my notes, focusing on understanding the underlying concepts, noting key points, and solving relevant problems when necessary. I ensured to organise my notes and keep them as concise as possible, facilitating easier and faster reading and assimilation for me.
What life skills did you acquire in the university?
During my undergraduate years, I engaged in various volunteering activities that provided valuable experiences working collaboratively with team members. Additionally, leading projects and participating in presentations allowed me to develop skills such as interpersonal skills, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking, among others.
What were the challenges you encountered as a student and how were you able to overcome them?
Balancing my academics with various volunteering engagements, simultaneously preparing for presentations, working on projects, term papers, and assignments, mastering four programming languages in a semester amidst the busy curriculum, as well as getting ready for and sitting for back-to-back exams — sometimes up to four exams in a week — were some of the challenges I encountered.
To tackle these, I developed a well-organised plan for each task, allowing me to effectively manage my time. I also drew out timelines and noted deadlines for each task, enabling me to prioritise tasks and monitor my progress.
Did you maintain a high CGPA from your first year?
Yes. I have consistently maintained a high CGPA since my first year. I approach all my courses with dedication and a positive attitude, regardless of their perceived difficulty. The motivation for my exceptional performance stemmed from various sources. The prizes awarded at the end of each session, the encouragement from my parents, and the high expectations of my mentees served as constant motivators. Also, my level adviser, Dr Popoola, addresses us at the beginning of every session, challenging our performance and offering words of encouragement. His words always inspired me to do better. Essentially, the combination of high expectations and the prospect of recognition and rewards motivated me to consistently strive for excellence.
What other factors contributed to your success?
Firstly, I attribute my success to God, who crowned my efforts and provided me with strength throughout my academic journey. In addition to hard work and determination, other contributing factors include walking alongside like-minded colleagues, seeking guidance and advice from my seniors, and benefiting from the encouragement and prayers of my parents.
How were you able to balance school work with social life?
I achieved a balance between school work and other activities through meticulous planning and effective time management. While I had to make some compromises in my study schedule to accommodate various commitments, I ensured that I created dedicated time, even if it meant staying awake at night, to cover all the outlined topics before exams.
Did your circle of friends or family influence your grades in any way?
Yes, both my circle of friends and family had a significant impact on my grades. I surrounded myself with zealous, passionate, determined, and hardworking friends. We consistently motivated one another, set goals collectively, shared helpful information, and challenged one another to strive for excellence. Additionally, my parents and siblings provided constant encouragement and prayers, contributing positively to my academic journey.
Do you think mechanical engineers have enough opportunities here in Nigeria? Are they appreciated enough?
Mechanical engineering is a versatile field offering diverse career paths such as energy, automobiles, robotics, and more. This versatility increases the likelihood of mechanical engineers finding job opportunities in various industries based on their area of specialisation.
However, job and internship opportunities tend to be more available in some regions of the country than others, and some available positions require specific years of experience, which often leaves fresh graduates with options such as graduate trainee programmes and internships, but these are limited. Mechanical engineers play a crucial role in various industries and are generally considered invaluable assets.
Nonetheless, the level of appreciation varies across industries, influenced by factors such as job position, specialisation, years of experience, and degree, among others.
Aside from being a mechanical engineer, what else do you enjoy?
I like working on robotic do-it-yourself (DIY) projects. I enjoy experimenting with various approaches and independently overcoming challenges encountered during these projects, which helps improve my innovative thinking and problem-solving skills. I also enjoy playing instruments and listening to music.
Do you have any role models that you look up to in your field?
I don’t have a single person I look up to. Instead, individuals who inspire me to think critically, take up challenges, question assumptions, and strive to make a positive impact on the world are my role models.
What are your career goals? How will your academic achievements help you accomplish these goals?
In the era of Industry 4.0, the integration of robotics into industrial production has the potential to enhance productivity and eliminate errors. Moving forward, I aspire to delve into robotics and explore its applications in industrial manufacturing and production. My strong academic record will attest to my abilities and would significantly contribute to building the necessary connections for making breakthroughs in this field. Additionally, I continuously acquire knowledge through various platforms, further preparing me for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
What is the one thing you would advise students to do or run away from?
In all your endeavors, maintain a positive attitude, and distance yourself from limiting beliefs and the fear of failure. Every setback is a stepping stone towards eventual success.
