The Ilorin branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its chairman, Barrister Kamaldeen Gambari, visited the Ilorin zonal command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to express their commitment to supporting the commission in its fight against corruption.
Last week, the Ilorin Branch of the NBA accused the Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC of not adhering to the Rule of Law and called for the transfer of the zonal commander.
The EFCC, in response, expressed shock and described the NBA’s statement as an attempt to intimidate the EFCC.
During the visit, Barrister Gambari stated that “the EFCC and the NBA are partners in progress” in the fight against corruption. He expressed satisfaction that the zonal commander is a part of the legal profession and mentioned that the purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the EFCC and the Ilorin branch of the NBA in the fight against corruption.
Barrister Gambari emphasised, “We are here to interface with the zonal commander, especially when we discovered that he’s one of us in the legal profession. The meeting was peaceful, engaging, and eventful.”
In response, the commander of the Ilorin zonal command of the EFCC, Michael Nzekwe, expressed delight at the visit and requested the support of lawyers for the commission’s efforts. He urged lawyers to verify claims made by their clients against the EFCC to avoid being misled.
Nzekwe stated, “The Commission has zero tolerance for corruption as it is prepared to investigate any allegation of unprofessional conduct brought with proof against any of its personnel.
We are not targeting any person or particular group of people neither shall we condone any act of professional misconduct from any of our personnel.”
He emphasized that the EFCC operates within the bounds of the law and is committed to maintaining that standard. Nzekwe encouraged lawyers to follow due procedures and assured them that the commission would not hinder any lawyer from conducting legitimate business.
