The family has a bigger role to play in addressing the issues of cultism and drug addiction that are rampant in the nation’s institutions of higher learning today.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone11, Mr Adeleye Oyebade, made this comment while speaking as one of the awardees at the 2019 Founder’s Day ceremony of the Ibadan City Polytechnic (IBC), held at the Campus II of the institution along Alakia, Isebo Road, Ibadan on Monday.
Mr Oyebade stated further that it was high time parents began to monitor and pay closer attention to the lifestyle of their children and the peer groups they belong to.
“Maintenance of security in the educational institutions and their communities is now the business of everyone, and not the police’s or government’s alone. The Nigeria Police and the institutions have complementary roles to play in providing adequate security within and around these communities,” he noted.
While he lauded the founder of ICP, Mr Amos Ajanaku, for his efforts in making education accessible to youths, he also thanked him and the management team for the honour they bestowed on him as the ‘2019 Ambassador of Peace, Policing with the Fear of God.’

He, however, advised the institution to endeavour to encourage the students to speak in the local languages so as to pass on the cultural heritage. He also appreciated the institution for the award.
Also speaking at the event as the special guest of honour, the Oluwo of Iwo land, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, commended the institution for adequately preparing for the future, saying “these children are the future of the nation that we all talk about; therefore, we must groom them very well.”
He charged the students to aspire to be greater than their progenitors through their positive and impactful achievements in life towards their communities and fellow human beings.
Chairman, Governing Council of the institution Ambassador Yemi Farounbi said that the Founder’s Day is an annual event earmarked to celebrate the foundation of ICP.
“It is an opportunity for us to look back to see where we started from and what we have done and then use that an as assessment for planning for the future so that we will continue to live our dream, he explained.”
