Newly sworn-in Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, AbdulGaniyu Vinod Obasa, has said his emergence in politics stems from a legacy of service, not entitlement, emphasising that leadership must be earned through dedication and impact.
In a post on X on Thursday, AbdulGaniyu, who is the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, explained that he was raised in a tradition of service rather than privilege, stressing that true leadership comes from consistent commitment to the people.
He noted that bearing a recognisable name does not make public service easier but instead demands greater effort to prove one’s sincerity and devotion to community growth.
AbdulGaniyu added that his focus in Agege has always been on delivering tangible results through initiatives such as food subsidy programmes, drainage cleanups, youth empowerment, and community safety.
He wrote, “I was born into a legacy of public service, and that’s exactly what it is: a legacy of service, not entitlement. For me, leadership isn’t an inheritance. It’s a responsibility I have to earn every single day.
“Being young and having a name people recognize doesn’t make the work easier. If anything, it makes it harder, because you have to prove, again and again, that you’re here to serve, not to sit. And in Agege, the work speaks louder than the surname.
“From food subsidy programs to drainage cleanups, youth empowerment, and community safety, my focus has always been simple: deliver results that improve lives. Because progress has no last name, only impact.
“I’m proud of where I come from, but even prouder of where we’re going. Together, as one Agege. This journey isn’t about who I am, but what we can achieve for our people. Let’s keep building.
His remarks followed the resignation of the former Agege Local Government Chairman, Hon. Tunde Azeez Disco, who stepped down due to health challenges that affected his capacity to perform his duties.
Tribune Online reports that Disco submitted his resignation letter to the Agege Legislative Council leadership on Wednesday.
After his resignation, the Leader of the House, Hon. Adeshina Haruna, administered the oath of office to AbdulGaniyu, who had served as vice chairman to Disco.
Haruna commended the former chairman for his selfless service to the community and confirmed that the council unanimously approved AbdulGaniyu’s appointment as substantive chairman to ensure stability and effective local governance.
The council also reaffirmed its oversight role, pledging stronger monitoring and evaluation of ongoing projects within the local government.
