I noticed that my husband of three years who had been previously sexually active had suddenly developed a weak erection. Being a rather shy person, he is not ready to see the doctor. Kindly let me know what could have caused this and how I can help him. He is 35 years old while I am 30 .

Weak Erections (Erectile Dystrophy) can be caused by physical or psychological problems or a combination of the two. Physical causes of ED are more common in older men. They occur because of disorders that can affect the nerves and blood vessels responsible for causing an erection. Erection problems can also be due to issues of the mind. Emotional issues can distract a man of any age from becoming aroused, and include, worry over not being able to achieve or maintain an erection, prolonged emotional distress related to economic, professional, or social issues, relationship conflicts and depression. Since your husband is still very young, the causes of his own problems are likely to be due to his lifestyle and psychological climate than a physical problem. Research has confirmed that younger men were found to use more tobacco, alcohol, and drugs than older men. It also suggests that erection problems in young men often stem from anxiety. In helping your husband, you may need to assist him to change some of his lifestyle choices such as; stopping tobacco use, drinking less alcohol, getting plenty of rest, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. If these changes in his lifestyle do not improve his situation, then you will need to convince him to see his doctor for detailed medical examination and tests.
