ABOUT 30 members of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, University of Lagos branch, have bagged first class degrees in the ongoing convocation.
The best graduating student, Alimi Adedeji, was the chairman of the MSSN UNILAG EMSS Freshers’ Orientation Programme for the 2018/19 session.
Others are Hassan Salaudeen who was the MSSN UNILAG Amir (President) and Labeebah Damilola Dhikrullah, daughter of a popular Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dhikrullah Shafi’i.
The first-class Muslim students also include sensational ewi reciter and the head of Yoruba Unit at MSSN Lagos Information Department, Adebayo Ọlabode; and Sherifat Omosholape Oshoala, a relative of Nigeria’s Super Falcons captain and Barcelona attacker, Asisat Oshoala.
Others are Ojo Ademola Dawud (Accounting), Bakare Mubarak Oluwatosin (Geophysics), Muhammad Mustapha Abiola (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering), Yusuf Odunayo Iyabo (Finance) and Oluwatobi Quadri Raji (Petroleum and Gas Engineering).
They also include Habeeb Olusanya (Mechanical Engineering), Animashaun Musa Bolarinwa (Surveying and Geoinformatics), Abdulmajeed Arogundade Ayodele (Mechanical Engineering), Aishat Ololade Liasu (Electrical and Electronics Engineering).
Other Muslim students who graduated with first class are Ajao Habeebah Kikelomo (Geology), Musa Idris Olaleye (Education and Mathematics), Monsurat Adeniyi (Accounting), Abass Ajibola (Marine Biology), Shoroye Soffiyya Morenikeji (Botany), AbdulHafis Odunuga (Geography and Planning), Yunus Abidemi Ibrahim (Accounting), Badeji Aisha Eniola (Mass Communication), Arikewuyo Mojeed (Mathematics) and Habeeb Aderolu (Microbiology).
The best graduating student, Alimi Adedeji, explained that MSSN UNILAG programmes and orientation helped him to achieve his goal of graduating with a first class.
He said: “What I really like about MSSN was that its members are very supportive and they are doing very well in their academics. After the first semester in year one, the Society organised a programme – I can’t remember the name now – where they gave out N5,000 to those who made a 5.0 GP and they were always inviting me to programmes to inspire other people. And for you to inspire others, you have to be on top of your game. MSSN, UNILAG branch, regularly organises success dua during examinations which I never miss because one has to put Allah first at all times.
“Another thing that helped me was helping others. Helping my course mates understand what we have been taught served as a motivation for me to read.”
On his part, Hassan Salaudeen, who was the MSSN-UNILAG Amir, said: “MSSN-UNILAG organised a lot of programmes for us and during my administration, we sustained the programmes which include Freshers’ Orientation Week, academic counselling seminar and tutorials. During my administration, we added a programme where we invited scholars to speak to members about academic excellence.
“There were challenges. We faced quite a number of them like paucity of chairs for students to sit on during tutorials, funds for our committed tutors, unavailability of mosque which used to be our statutory venue for tutorials and all. Alhamdulillah, we were able to manage the challenges. At some point, we had to do tutorials at faculties and even outside the campus.”
Reacting, the Amir of MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit, Miftahudeen Thanni, congratulated the outstanding students and urged them not to relent in their academic endeavours.
Thanni said: “Their emergence is a fulfillment of one of the objectives of the organisation, which is academic excellence. We are happy for the feat they have achieved and we will do everything to assist them and make them better persons.
“We hope that they will serve as mentors to others and encourage them to do better.”
