Having a proper diet is one of the most important prerequisites to living a healthy, happy, and pleasant life. Or, at least that is what we are told… Ever since we were kids, teachers, grandparents, parents, or whoever else, have been telling us the importance of a “complete diet.”
But what does that even mean? Aren’t there always stories of college kids who are surviving off of frozen waffles and ramen noodles? How important can it really be? I mean, am I really going to die if I don’t get every little nutrient that I need?
The simple, and only, answer is yes. You need all of the nutrients that it lists on the back of your cereal box and more. You need all of your macronutrients such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, and all of your micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
Saying you don’t need a complete diet with all of its intricacies is like saying that when you play on Play Croco casino login, you don’t need to have a full deck of cards. But, that’s not true at all! Just like you need all 52 playing cards, you need all 6 major nutrient groups.
Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies
To begin, I will start with vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Sadly, vitamin and mineral deficiencies are found all around the globe, even in the wealthiest of countries. Then again, hunger is also found even in the wealthiest nations, so that’s not all that surprising.
However, vitamin and mineral deficiencies are something that is hard to deal with unless you know what you are doing, and are making sure you are eating a complete diet. For instance, you need to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, which many modern diets can end up leaving out.
As a nation becomes more and more wealthy, the people tend to want more and more meat. And as meat becomes more and more readily available, people tend to eat less and less of the vegetables they need and instead eat more meat (usually processed) and carbohydrates.
This leaves many people with a diet that is less than complete. Vitamin deficiencies can lead to a whole host of problems, including some really well-known diseases such as Scurvy (Vitamin C Deficiency) and Beriberi (Vitamin B1 Deficiency).
Mineral deficiencies can also be very problematic causing such problems as goiter which is an iodine deficiency. You also need enough sodium in your body otherwise you will simply just die.
Needless to say, it is important for everyone to get a well rounded and complete set of minerals and vitamins. If you are worried you are not getting everything you need, check the foods you buy.
Eating a lot of fruits and vegetables is a good start, but if you are missing things then you may want to check the rice you buy. In some countries, rice is fortified with vitamins and minerals, so you may want to double check and not wash your rice if it is fortified.
Macronutrients
A problem more widespread and harder to deal with than vitamin deficiencies is people not getting enough of their macronutrients. This can lead to severe health problems including simple starvation.
The first and most simple to understand macronutrient is carbohydrates. Calories are like fuel for your body. Imagine it’s like the wood you put on a fire to keep it burning. You run out of wood the fire dies. Carbohydrates are the most readily available source of calories.
So, it is important that we eat enough in order to get the number of calories that we need to function. All the more so if you are someone who is physically active most of the day.
Fats are another source of calories, and can actually store many more calories than carbohydrates. However, the calories from fat aren’t as easy for our bodies to use, so carbohydrates end up being a more easily accessible source.
Fat is also important because they contain certain compounds and chemicals our body needs to live. Our brains are made of fat, so we need fats to help our brains functioning properly.
There are also certain vitamins and minerals that dissolve in fats and not water, so eating fats can help our bodies to digest these nutrients.
Finally, there are proteins. Protein is a large group of compounds that make up most of the dry weight of our body. Meaning, if we are 60% water, then the 40% of our weight that remains is mostly, or at least a large portion, proteins.
Therefore, protein is an essential nutrient for everyone to intake in order to facilitate proper growth and development. It is also important to get enough protein in order to keep our bodies healhty. Our cells are constantly being replaced after all.
