Gun-wielding assailants, on Sunday morning, killed a mobile police escort and a driver in Warri, Delta State.
The incident, which created panic as people scampered to safety, took place at about 11:12 a.m at the popular and busy Airport Junction in Warri.
Sources claimed the assailants, who operated in a yellow Lexus Jeep, blocked and killed their victims inside a red Toyota Avenza with Registration No. LAGOS BWR 170 AX.
Further report says the deceased mobile policeman was attached to Chief Micheal Johnny, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and an Ijaw chief.
They were accosted and killed while returning from the church where they had taken the wife of the APC chieftain.
“The police escort was shot in the head, brain spilt on the seat. The driver also was shot in the abdomen, his body was lying beside the vehicle.
“I saw the DPO Enerhen there retrieving the bodies,” a source told Tribune Online.
Some unconfirmed reports said the assailants were actually after the wife of Chief Johnny but missed their target as she had alighted and was still in the church.
The assailants reportedly took nothing from the victims after killing them including the service rifle of the deceased escort which was recovered and now in the custody of the police at Enerhen Police Station.
Scores of sympathisers thronged the busy Airport Junction as the atmosphere became charged after the dastardly act was carried out.
The front passenger seat of the red Avenza car where the cop was killed was splashed with his blood.
Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident to our reporter.
He said although the police cop and his driver were killed, nobody was kidnapped as being rumoured.
