The Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta, Oru East Supreme Elders Council, Imo State, has asked Governor Hope Uzodimma to as a matter of necessity, convene an emergency stakeholders meeting of the oil bearing communities in the state.
In a statement issued after their conference held at Concord Hotel Owerri, on Monday, and jointly endorsed by the National Secretary and the National Organizing Secretary, Hon.Uzoka Chukwuemeka and Hon.Justus Ojika, respectively, the group said that such meeting would offer an apple opportunity to resolve all issues concerning the oil producing communities in the state.
Considering the current happenings in the state as it concerns insecurity, the group called on the governor to convoke a pro-friendly security summit as a measure towards tackling insecurity and building the bridge between the government and the people of the state.
While passing a vote of confidence on one of their illustrious sons and the Managing Director of Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), Chief Charlie Orie, they lauded the achievements so far recorded especially in ensuring peace in the Niger Delta region of the state devoid of restiveness.
They thanked the governor for his support to the MD and the Commission while appealing to him to continue especially in funding the place to ensure the realization of its purpose to the oil communities.
The group advocated for the establishment of Security Trust Find via ISOPADEC where even the multi-national companies operating in the area could drive and execute their social responsibilities.
They said: “We passionately appeal to the Governor of Imo State to massively fund ISOPADEC and create community-oriented projects where the youths can be engaged to reduce restiveness in the areas.”
The Supreme Elders Council advised the governor to engage the youths of the oil bearing communities in pipeline surveillance, and in the Traffic Empowerment Program as a measure towards giving the youths a sense of belonging.
They advised the youths of the Niger Delta region of Imo State to embrace peace and shun violence through the creation of an information centre where issues can be approach through dialogue and not violence.
