The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), an umbrella body of all the youth groups in the South-East geopolitical zone, has raised alarm over the incessant road accidents along Okpuala-Owerri Federal road, especially at the narrow bridges along the road.
Describing it as disturbing, the President General of the group, Goodluck Egwu Ibem, called for urgent attention to avert further calamities on the road.
He stated this while reacting to a ghastly road accident that occurred on Tuesday night at Okpuala bridge along Owerrinta- Owerri Federal road, caused by the narrow nature of the road and bridges.
The group said that the accident was too fatal to be ignored, urging that something should be urgently done to expand and fix the bridges and road to standard.
“The bridges along the road are so narrow and that is why accidents occur on that road regularly. It is very pathetic,” COSEYL lamented.
According to it, the road had been awarded by the Federal Government to a contractor, lamenting that nothing serious was happening on the road to show any seriousness in fixing the dilapidated bridges and the road itself.
Ibem called on the Federal Minister of Works, Mr Babatunde Fashola, to look into the road and bridges, stating that the road in the past years had been a death trap that had claimed countless lives.
The group pointed out that the bridges along the road needed urgent and immediate attention.
