Ganduje mourns as 20 die in boat accident

Published by

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has confirmed that a boat mishap happened in the state on Wednesday as a result of overloading and it claimed about 20 lives.

The governor said this while calling on boat operators to always take the issue of overloading very seriously, adding that they can still make profits without overloading their boats.

This was contained in a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Comrade Abba Anwar and a copy made available to pressmen in Kano, the state capital.

According to him, “We learned that the boat started its journey from Hayin Badau to Bagwai conveying mostly people who are on their way to attend a Maulud celebration. It ferried about 50 people with loads, and as it got to the middle of the water, it capsized due to overloading. And most of the affected people were said to be Islamiyyah students.”

“While we pray to Allah to forgive and bless the souls of those who died and pray for a quick recovery of those who are in the hospital receiving medical attention, I urge boat operators to always take the issue of overloading very seriously.”

“So far, based on the information we received, as of today, there have been 20 deaths recorded, 7 in the hospital and another 8 people found this morning during the rescue operation. We salute the courage and patriot posture of the rescue teams,” he noted.
