No fewer than four people had died and 15 others sustained various degrees of injury when a Toyota Hiace bus conveying Christian women coming from a burial ceremony involved in a lone crash.
The incident happened on Thursday when the driver of the I’ll fated vehicle lost control, veered off the road and hit a tree.
The women under the aegis of ‘The Catholic Women Organization CWO were said to be returning from the burial of one of their members when the accident happened at Wannune, headquarters of the Tarka local government area of Benue state.
It was gathered from an eyewitness that 19 passengers including the driver were in the vehicle.
“The women were said to be members of St. Francis Catholic Church, Makurdi and were returning to Makurdi after attending the burial of one of their members”, an eyewitness said.
The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, Yakubu Mohammed confirmed the accident.
He said that 19 persons were involved in the auto crash, 18 women and a male driver while four of the passengers died on the spot.
“The crash occurred today around 1148hrs. Only one vehicle was involved, a Toyota Hiace. There were 19 people in the vehicle out of which 18 are females and then one male adult. So, the number of injured persons is 15 while the number of those who were killed is four.
“Both the injured and the dead have been taken to St. Christopher and NKST Hospitals, both in Annunne. The cause of the accident is overspeeding. It happened one kilometre after NYSC Orientation Camp, Annunne,” the sector commander said.
