THE Federal Controller of Work, Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, an engineer, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would surely deliver the entire stretch of Lagos-Ibadan Road’s project in 2022.
The controller gave the assurance during the tour of the road’s project , while sensitising motorists on the planned diversion of traffic on the route to allow the launching of beams on one of the newly constructed flyovers on the expressway.
From the look of things, Popoopla explained that out of the road’s total length of 43. 6 kilometres (Ojota, Lagos to Shagamu Interchange), the contractor, Messrs Julius Berger Plc, had already asphalted 38.1 kilometres at both sides of the expressway.
“You can see the pace the contractor is moving, I am assuring you that they will deliver this project come 2022. The total length of the project is 43.6 kilometres out of which 38.1km has already been achieved.
“So we have less than six kilometers to achieve. The contractor will not use the whole of one year to achieve six kilometres if it has achieved 38.1 kilometres.”
Speaking about Makun’s flyover bridge along the expressway, Popoola explained that the contractor would launch the beams at the weekend, adding that the process will take 72 hours.
Contrary to rumour making the rounds that the expressway will be on gridlock for three months, the federal controller of work said it wasn’t true, pointing out that diversion had already been created about 400 metres away from the flyover at Makun where the contractor would launched the beam on top of the abutment and piers that were already completed.
He assured that motorists would still be allowed to move, but that there would be diversion 400-metre away and 400-metre after where the contractor is working.
He cautioned motorists to remain disciplined. “Once they divert, they should know that they cannot continue with the speed they were coming with,” he said.
He stated that the federal government is also working with the Federal Road Safety Corps to ensure that motorists enjoy free movement.
Impressed by the level of work down, he said that the efforts the Federal Government had made to develop the road is yielding results. “You can also see some developments around the corridor of the road. So these are the socio economic impacts the construction has created. A lot of people are gainfully employed; housing estates are coming up and factories are coming up along the corridor of the road,” Popoola said.
Julius Berger is currently undertaking the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the stretch of the Lagos to Shagamu, while Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) is handling Shagamu to Ibadan portion of the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.
