The ongoing training of agricultural extension agents in Kebbi State by the Federal Government will boost agricultural production, State Commissioner of Agriculture and Mineral Resources, Maigari Abdullahi, has said.
Abdullahi stated this in Birnin-Kebbi at the opening ceremony of a three days training of extension agents, adding that the training would impact positively on the development and encouragement of agriculture in the state.
“Our farmers are eager, they are prepared and they have farms, equipment and inputs that are necessary, but without them having the knowledge on the utilisation of modern equipment, they may not make good use of them,” he said.
The commissioner commended the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for organising the training programme, he expressed that the initiative would boost yield and operations in agriculture.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mahmood Abubakar, in his remarks, said that agricultural extension has metamorphosed from one stage to another.
The Minister who was represented by the Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture in the state, Engr Shehu Abdullahi, stated that agric extension has asserted its importance in rural and semi-urban development, food and job supply for the fast-growing population, especially in emerging economies such as Nigeria.
“Over the years, the fortunes of the Agricultural Extension system has declined majorly due to decreased funding, policy changes, reduced manpower and lack of young people in Agricultural entrepreneurship,” he added.
