The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to drive meaningful employment opportunities, particularly for young Nigerians.
According to the Labour Minister’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Patience Onuobia, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, stated this in Abuja while receiving a delegation from a consortium of NGOs under the United Nations NGO Committee on Social Development, led by its national head, Daniel Black.
Dingyadi emphasized that the government was eager to collaborate with civil society groups to develop innovative strategies for creating safe and sustainable jobs, especially in the blue-collar sector.
“Our focus is to ensure that people secure jobs they can call their own—jobs they have established themselves, not just white-collar positions. These jobs will provide employment opportunities for our youths and contribute significantly to national development,” the Minister said.
He reiterated the government’s dedication to fostering employment by exploring various avenues to ensure Nigerian youths are gainfully engaged.
“We can work together to create safe and sustainable job opportunities for our young men and women across the country,” he added.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Daniel Black, announced that the group would be attending the 63rd session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development in February 2025 in New York, where they will present Nigeria’s social development experience.
In preparation for this, the group will host a United Nations Social Development Workshop on 30 January in Abuja, aimed at strengthening government-CSO collaboration to improve social development indicators in Nigeria.
“At the end of the workshop, we will develop a report highlighting the realities of social development in Nigeria and the contributions of government ministries and parastatals in improving these indicators. This report will be presented at the UN Commission for Social Development,” Black explained.
He extended an invitation to the Ministry of Labour and Employment to participate in the workshop, emphasising the strong link between labour policies, decent work, and social development.
