The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Oyo State Government, inaugurated the National Animal Disease Information System (NADIS) Mobile Application on Tuesday.
The application is designed to track and report animal disease outbreaks in Oyo State. This information was conveyed in a statement issued by Mr Gideon Alade, the Coordinating Director of the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism, on Wednesday in Ibadan.
NADIS is a platform that allows animal health workers to report cases of disease outbreaks in their environment. With support from the World Bank, the mobile application NADIS-Mobile was launched to facilitate accurate reporting of disease outbreaks by animal health workers.
A training session was organized for private and public animal health workers at the Conference Room of the State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Dr Olaseju Taiwo, a Veterinary and Pest Control expert from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, served as the lead facilitator. He explained that the new software consists of two applications: NADIS-Mobile, which is used for data collection from the field, and NADIS-Admin, which allows for the viewing and analysis of reported diseases.
Dr Taiwo mentioned that the application can be downloaded from the Play Store as “VETSARK” or accessed via mobile browsers by typing “nadis.mobile.ng.”
The app enables veterinary outfits in the public and private sectors, as well as universities, to accurately report cases of disease outbreaks in their vicinity, which will prompt intervention from government authorities at all levels.
He emphasized that the purpose of the training session was to educate private and public veterinarians on how to use the National Animal Disease Information System (NADIS) and to improve and expand their surveillance capabilities.
Dr Kareem Akeem, the Head of the State Disease Reporting Records Collation and Epidemiology Unit, highlighted the importance of systematic and timely disease reporting. He explained that disease reporting involves the collection and submission of data on disease cases to the appropriate authorities responsible for surveillance and control. Key entities involved in disease reporting include laboratories, livestock producers, research institutions, animal owners, and government agencies.
In his opening remarks, Alhaji Opawusi Olalekan, the Coordinating Director of the Oyo State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, stated that the training aimed to equip animal health workers with the necessary knowledge on disease reporting. He emphasized that the training would help improve their practices at their respective veterinary outfits for the benefit of the public.
Dr. (Mrs.) L.S. Azeez, the State Director of Veterinary Services, welcomed participants to the training session and highlighted its timeliness in light of recent outbreaks of deadly zoonotic diseases such as Anthrax in some African countries, resulting in the deaths of animals and humans. She expressed confidence that the training would assist the state government in implementing a timely and accurate disease reporting format to prevent and control outbreaks.
Dr Azeez called on private veterinary outfits to cooperate fully with government officials in collating disease reports throughout the state. The training session was attended by veterinary doctors from the private, public, and university sectors, as well as all Directors of Agriculture from the 33 Local Government Areas of the State.
