Former Big Brother Naija reality star and actress, Eriata Ese, has set the record straight after coming under fire for allegedly dismissing marriage as “not a flex.”
The actress came under scrutiny when a blog reported that she had responded to a critic who mocked her for flaunting a baby bump without marriage by downplaying the value of matrimony. In her alleged response, she was quoted as saying that marriage isn’t a flex, sparking widespread debate online.
The report triggered a wave of backlash, with many social media users accusing her of undermining an institution that still holds deep significance in Nigerian society. But in a swift response, Eriata bowed to pressure and issued a clarification, insisting her statement was taken out of context.
Taking to her Instagram story, she firmly denied making such a remark in earnest, stressing that she would never, under any serious circumstance, call marriage “not a flex.”
According to her, she grew up in a loving home and has always understood the value of family.
“Please ignore bloggers,” she wrote. “I would never say ‘marriage is not a flex’ in a serious conversation. I grew up in a loving home and know how important family is. If you know and follow me, you’ll always see I have the tag ‘lover girl’ in some of my posts.”
Eriata further explained that she was only engaging with her followers in a playful manner, not making a serious declaration about her views on marriage. She maintained that her words were twisted to drive traffic to blogs at her expense.
“I’m not trying to explain, I just want to correct the narrative that is being passed about me because I know how people believe anything they see on these blogs. Only a damaged person will say a good marriage is not a flex,” she clarified.
The reality star doubled down on her belief in love and healthy relationships, describing them as life’s greatest treasures. She admitted that she knows firsthand how exciting and fulfilling it feels to be in a supportive relationship.
“I know how exciting it feels to be in a healthy relationship, it’s like a dream come true coming home to someone who doesn’t joke about you,” she added.
In a separate post, Eriata revealed that her initial response was simply her way of creating engagement with her fans. According to her, she often jokes with her followers, and this instance was no different.
“This is me only creating engagement on my post and cruising with my followers, which I always do, and a lot of people can attest to this,” she said. “I mind my business and stay away from anything that will put me in the blog for any negative narrative, but it seems like it’s almost unavoidable. It’s well.”
