The Ekiti State Judicial Panel of Inquiry into allegations of human rights violations against police officers has frowned at the failure of the Nigerian Army to honour panel’s invitation to respond to allegations against them.
The 32 artillery brigade in Akure, the Ondo Ztate capital is the supervising barracks for Ekiti State.
The Chairman of the Panel, Justice Cornelius Akintayo (Retd) who spoke during Thursday’s sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital said that the army had been served five times as respondents but no response from the military.
He said: “We have to put on record that this is the 5th case in which the Nigerian Army has been served as a respondent but failed to show up and there is no letter or representation to show courtesy, the Panel is of the view that the Nigerian Army should show respect for this panel set up by the authority of our land and respond appropriately to the invitation.”
He, however, directed that the Nigerian Army be contacted again for the sixth time on the adjourned dates of the Petitions, “to come and answer to the various allegations against them.”

He maintained that fairness was a key component of justice towards achieving peace in the society, noting that their presence before the panel constituted by the government was important in establishing the truth from the allegations.
“This panel was set up to allow peace to reign in our society, it must be of paramount importance to the Army that peace to be made from this end is not by force but through dialogue that is believed to be more satisfactory to all the parties,” he said.
He said that their appearance to throw more light into the allegations against them will unravel the truth and strengthened the peace and confidence of the Nigerian populace in the Nigerian Army.
He stressed further that, “Nigerian Army cannot claim that they are not aware of the allegations against them, and this panel is time-bound to deliver on its mandate.
“I hereby call on the Nigerian Army to answer the Petitions against them and fulfil their own democratic part in reshaping our society which we believe will put the record straight and we all live together happily,” Justice Akintayo said.
