EMIR of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has been appointed as the pioneer chancellor of Al-Istiqama University, situated in Sunmaila, Kano State.
Emir Aminu is presently serving as the chancellor of University of Calabar, under the Federal government appointment.
While presenting the letter of appointment to the Emir in his palace, the founder of Al-Istiqama University and former member of Takai/Sunmaila federal constituency, Honourable Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, said that Emir Aminu was considered worthy as the chancellor of the new university based on merit.
According to Honourable Sunmaila, “the Emir of Kano remains one of the topmost Northern traditional rulers whose influence cuts across the country.”
He added: “The proprietor and entire management of Al-Istiqama University cherished Alhaji Aminu’s contribution to education and human development. Hence, his appointment will further enhance the mission of expanding the frontiers of knowledge in Kano.”
Honourable Sunmaila further disclosed that the 100 capacity female hostel at the university had been named after Hajia Asiya Bayero (Mai Babban Daki), the mother of the Emir.
Speaking, the Emir of Kano applauded the proprietor and management of the new university for the appointment, assuring of his commitment to bring his wealth of experience to bear in transforming the institution.
He commended the institution for the honour bestowed on him and promised to work towards the success of the university and ensure that the university becomes one of the best tertiary institutions in the country.
Earlier, the pioneer vice chancellor of the university, Professor Salisu Shehu, hinted that academic session had commenced in the university with 400 students.
Professor Shehu stated that the university got the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) approval in February, 2021, with 15 undergraduate programmes in three faculties namely, Basic and Health Science Art, Social Sciences and Management Studies and Science and Computing.
