The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Major-General Shuaibu Ibrahim has charged the 2022 Batch ‘A’ (Stream 2) corps members to embrace self-employment as a panacea to youth unemployment.
He stated that the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme has been designed to equip corps members for self-employment and wealth creation.
The NYSC boss was speaking through the State Coordinator, NYSC Oyo State, Mrs Grace Ogbuogebe at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Batch A Stream Two Orientation exercise.
He said that the advocacy for the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund was partly informed by the desire of the management of the scheme to make the SAED programme more impactful.
He also informed the corps members that the moment the Trust Fund becomes operational, the status of the NYSC SAED programme would change for the better.
He added that corps members would have the opportunity of being supported with start-up grants and they would employ a good number of youths and pull many out of poverty.
The DG equally tasked corps members to be security conscious at all times and avoid late-night journeys, night parties and visitation to dangerous places.
While assuring the corps members that their welfare and safety are of topmost priority to the management, he urged them to stay out of trouble and warned them against drug abuse and trafficking.
He also warned the corps members against cybercrime and advanced fee fraud, saying anyone caught would be dealt with according to the provisions of the NYSC Bye-Laws.
Ibrahim enjoined corps members to identify the felt needs of their host communities and initiate community development projects that would improve their standard of living.
He also added that it is required of them to be diligent in the performance of their duties at their various places of primary assignment.
Earlier in a virtual meeting, the Director-General held with 2022 Batch ‘A’ corps members and camp officials, he warned the corps members against unethical use of social media. He enjoined them to use social media to promote love, unity and integration.
While stressing the need for them to be security conscious, he advised them not to request rides from strangers or put themselves in harm’s way.
The DG also warned the corps members not to get involved in politics and should not allow themselves to be used by politicians.
He said as corps members they are expected to be apolitical because they are the umpires that will be used for election duties.
