Ekiti LG poll: Party leaders announcing boycott are rebels ― PDP chairman

Oguntuase

The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti state, Chief Gboyega Oguntuwase has said party leaders announcing the boycott of the forthcoming local government election in the state should be disregarded.

Oguntuwase who spoke at the weekend after the extended meeting of the State Working Committee of the party in Ado-Ekiti revealed that PDP would field candidates for the December 7 poll.

Leaders of the party in Ado local government area led by its chairman, Yinka Olomofe had last week directed members to distance themselves from the poll. They alleged that state government had perfected plans to rig the election.

Oguntuwase, however, disowned the position of the members, saying necessary punishment would be meted out on those he described as, “leading a rebellion”.

He noted that the constitution of the country allow people to vote and be voted for in any election, calling on the chairmanship and councillorship candidates to intensify their campaigns with the sole aim of winning.

According to him: “The position of the extended executives, the State Working Committee with all-party chairmen of all the local governments, we met and we discussed extensively on what the PDP should do concerning the local government election.

“We all resolved that in the overriding interest of the party, so that there will be activity in the party, so that Ekiti people will have option, so that the fundamental provision of the constitution that we all have right to vote and be voted for would not be blotted out by unnecessary emotions and sabotage that we should participate in the elections.

“Any chairman of any local government that is making an announcement to the contrary, no matter who is backing him, shall receive adequate query and punishment for leading a rebellion at the appropriate time. I, as the state chairman, confirm that we shall take part in the elections.”
